Sir Frederick Gibberd (1908 -84) designed the airport’s terminal buildings, the central tower and the multifaith St George’s Chapel.
Yet perhaps his greatest achievement lies in the development of Harlow New Town in the 1950s. Indeed, Gibberd must have been satisfied with his work, as he made his home - notable garden and all - in the town. |
Save the environment with a wood floor
You are probably already aware that wood floors are highly durable and reliable, and that a well-maintained wooden floor can lend your home an air of refinement and sophistication. But did you know that wooden floors are also more environmentally-friendly than other types of floor? If you want to minimise your environmental impact and do your bit to save the planet, opting for a wooden floor instead of an artificial alternative is a great idea. Today, we’ll look at the main reasons why wooden floors are so much better for the environment than their inorganic counterparts.
1. Biodegradable materials
Most types of floor need to have individual boards or tiles replaced occasionally. Obviously, this means that the old, ruined boards or tiles need to be thrown out. If they’re made from artificial materials, this can be a problem, because they won’t biodegrade and will therefore have a negative impact on the environment. They may even release hazardous chemicals or materials when they are disposed of. In contrast, wooden floorboards are completely natural and therefore biodegrade relatively quickly without leaving any damaging residue. A wooden floor can last for decades if it is properly maintained, but when individual boards are replaced, they will biodegrade harmlessly.
2. Clean production process
Artificial flooring materials have to be created using industrial processes that may release large quantities of pollution. In contrast, while wooden floorboards have to be cut to the correct size and smoothed down, they are made from a natural material that doesn’t need to be created industrially. This means that when you choose to have a wood floor installed, you can feel confident that it wasn’t made in an environmentally-damaging way.
3. Durability
Replacing any floor involves using more materials, which isn’t very environmentally friendly. However, as we mentioned in our introduction, wood floors are incredibly durable. As a result, they don’t need to be replaced for decades after installation. By avoiding replacements by choosing a sturdy wood floor, you also avoid using large quantities of raw materials and therefore help to protect the environment.
